Gaining Perspective: Understanding AI

AI is currently on the rise. With tools such as ChatGPT, Bard, and Midjourney, AI can set its footprint in the design world. Being able to ask questions for ChatGPT or type in a scene and get an image for Midjourney has been incredible for the pathway in development for artists and designers to develop ideas and do rapid prototyping for their projects.

However, despite so, many artists and designers are worried about the use of AI in the development of generating ideas and artwork as the automation of AI will take away their jobs. While this concern is proper in itself, the fact is that designers cannot be replaced by AI. When it all boils down, machines cannot understand human emotions and values, which is an important aspect to know when developing human-centered designs.

We have to go through the steps of understanding the user to be fully capable of designing the best product or system, the use of AI can just help speed up our process. We mustn't rely on AI, but use it within the process. Let me elaborate more on that topic. Frequently on Instagram or LinkedIn, I see many designers using AI-generated images and using it as their final product. While yes, we can use these as a basic idea of a product to show the client, it should never be the final design of a product. Relying on AI to generate images of the product for the final loses the importance of prototyping and testing for human-centered design.

The best way to proceed is to use AI to refresh ideas and help develop projects further. One example is using ChatGPT to ask for hundreds of taglines or titles for your project. Taglines are hard to come up with, through the answers of ChatGPT, help us quickly compile names and be able to narrow down the best tagline.

Overall, AI is a powerful and growing tool in the design industry, and while it is scary, we should use it to the best advantage. AI can deliver insights, generate ideas and take away the guesswork and implement better strategies, and with that, it's important that designers take advantage of it and develop strategies and innovative ideas.
